Generic bacteria are very slow in degrading grease. Undigested FOG accumulates on the surfaces of settling tanks, digesters, pumps, and sensors. Eventually, fats and oil coagulate into massive 'fatbergs' that shut down sewer mains. FOG also reduce the efficiency of aerobic and anaerobic treatment drastically.

Fats promote the growth of long-chain bacteria in the effluent. These unwanted bacteria reduce the settleability of flocs in the wastewater and lead to foaming and a bad smell. To deal with these issues you need bacteria that can degrade fat, oil and grease. You need FOG Buster

FOG Buster degrades vegetable oil, ghee, butter, animal fat, oil, dairy fats, spent waste cooking oil, grease, etc. It also degrades machine oil and grease.

This depends on the volume of effluent to be treated and the level of fats, oil and grease in the system. Your Wastewater Treatment Plant Consultant is the best person to answer this question. Nevertheless, here are some ballpark estimates about the minimum amount of FOG Buster you might need for oil degradation. Let us work out the requirement based on the amount of oil in the water and a few other parameters.

Level 1
You see a thin film of oil floating on the water. The bacterial floc settling is good. You are not seeing any long filaments or fungi in the water under the microscope. Your pipes, filters, and valves may have a thin layer of grease and scum coating them internally. But so far no equipment is damaged. If this is your case, then congratulations, you have detected the problem in its early stage. This problem may not be very old in your system. A dose of 1 to 2 litres per 1000 litre of effluent is recommended in your case. Since your system is working well, you need to only monitor the plant well after the oil-degrading bacteria are added to the plant.

Level 2
There is a layer of oil and scum floating in the water. You can see, brown to black scum/debris/fatbergs floating in the water. A thick layer of oil and scum is coating your pipes. There are regions in your filters and media that are now blocked due to oil and grease [20 to 30 % blockage]. You can see long filaments or fungi in the water and the floating scum when observed under the microscope. Most importantly the floc settling is affected. If that's the case, you need to act fast. A stitch in time saves nine. The system goes down to level 3 very rapidly. A dose of 3 to 4 litre per 1000 litre of effluent is recommended in your case.

Level 3
If you are at this stage, then the mere addition of oil-degrading bacteria is not going to help. But the good news is that you can fix the problem. It is just going to take a little extra effort. There are a couple of things we need to fix before we add bacteria to the system.

At this stage, you will see a thick layer of fatbergs/scum floating on the surface of the wastewater. The plant would have become septic and you may be getting bad odour from the ETP. Microscopy may reveal crosslinking of flocs due to long filaments in water.

Check the DO levels. Have they dropped down recently? You may need to improve the DO first. The valves, pipes, and filter meshes may be clogged up to 70% or above. If any valves, or filter mesh have become completely inoperable, you may need to physically remove, clean and replace them. A consultant can help you in getting the structural elements of the plant back in place. Get the components cleaned up.

If the plant remains in septic state for too long, you are putting your existing bacteria at risk. The system may get highly contaminated by unwanted filamentous microbes. These filaments will affect sludge settling drastically. In extreme cases, under your consultant's guidance, you may have to lose a significant portion of your contaminated MLSS.

At this stage, the dose requirement can be as high as 10 litres per 1000 litre of effluent. Keep a close watch on the DO and pH of the effluent water. If you have fungal contamination, maintaing the pH around 7.5 to 7.8 till the fungal contamination is reduced. Later you can come back to neutal pH as usuall. Initially, the progress will seem slow, but once the plant starts coming back on track, you will see the improvements happening very rapidly.
